Single-tuned filters
The single-tuned filter, also known as a series filter, allows a specific frequency to pass while attenuating all other frequencies. It consists of a series resonant circuit with an inductor (L) and a capacitor (C). The circuit's resonant frequency (fr) is determined by the values of L and C, given by fr = 1/(2πLC). At the resonant frequency, the filter's impedance is at its minimum, allowing the corresponding harmonic to pass.
Double-tuned filters
The double-tuned filter is a combination of two single-tuned filters. It is designed to allow two specific frequencies to pass while attenuating all other frequencies. It is useful when two significant harmonics need to be eliminated. The design of a double-tuned filter involves selecting the inductance and capacitance values for each resonant circuit such that they resonate at the two target harmonic frequencies.
High-pass filters
The high-pass filter allows all frequencies above a certain cut-off frequency to pass while attenuating all frequencies below the cut-off. This type of filter consists of a series circuit with a resistor (R) and a capacitor (C). The cut-off frequency (fc) is determined by the values of R and C, given by fc = 1/(2πRC). At frequencies above the cut-off, the filter's impedance decreases, allowing the frequencies to pass. At frequencies below the cut-off, the filter's impedance increases, attenuating the frequencies.
Harmonic mitigation
Passive harmonics are designed to reduce harmonics in the power system. These harmonics, caused by VFDs, can disrupt the quality of power, leading to equipment malfunctions and overheating. The primary advantage of using these filters is the mitigation of harmonics, ensuring cleaner and more reliable power.
Improved energy efficiency
By reducing harmonics, passive harmonic filters help optimize energy efficiency. Inefficient power systems can lead to increased energy costs and reduced equipment lifespan. These filters enhance the efficiency of your VFD system, translating into energy savings.
Enhanced equipment lifespan
Harmonic distortions can significantly impact the lifespan of electrical equipment. By smoothing out the power waveform, passive harmonic filters protect your VFD and other connected machinery, prolonging their operational life.
Compliance with standards
Many industrial settings are subject to power quality regulations and standards. Passive harmonic ensures your VFD system adheres to these standards, avoiding potential fines or penalties.
Reduced downtime
Harmonic disturbances can lead to unexpected downtime due to equipment failures. Installing passive harmonic helps in minimizing these disruptions, ensuring continuous operations.
